Admissions

Grade Point Averages The B.S. degree curriculum contains rigorous academic courses, and we want to ensure that our incoming students can handle the work. We evaluate two separate grade point averages (GPAs) on student applications: one for the most recent 45 semester credits and one for science prerequisites.

Observation Requirement  A minimum of 20 hours of dental observation is required. Applicants who have worked or currently work in a dental setting are exempt from this requirement, although observation of a dental hygienist specifically is preferred. The program is committed to public health and prefers some observation hours be in public health. Settings may include a public dental clinic, dental school clinic, dental hygiene school clinic, mobile dental van and dental clinics in community health centers, hospitals, nursing homes, schools, prisons and other institutional settings.

Prerequisite Coursework  The following courses are vital to your success in the professional curriculum. You must complete all prerequisite coursework and at least 48 semester hours prior to enrollment but may apply for admission while you are still completing these courses. An unofficial prerequisite evaluation is available to help you determine which required coursework you have completed and which coursework you still need to meet our prerequisite requirements.

Interview Days  You are more than just the words and numbers on your application, and we want to get to know you during the interview process. Based on a review of applications by the Admissions Committee, applicants are invited for a required, individual interview. At the same time, the Admissions Committee can evaluate your motivation for a dental hygiene career, ability to think clearly and logically, self-confidence and communication skills.
